German is an official language of Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and South Tyrol in Italy. There are approximately 105 million speakers of German.

 

German is the most spoken native langauge within the European Union and the third most taught langauge in US schools (after French and Spanish).

 

As a prominent language of science and literature, one tenth of all books in the world are published in German. This makes German the fifth most popular language in which to publish new material.
