Italian is an official langauge of Italy, Switzerland, Vatican City, San Marino, and Istria (in Croatia and Slovenia). Italian is also widely spoken in Albania and Malta, and among large Italian expatriate communitites around the world.

Including native and second language speakers Italian is spoken by around 85 million people. It is the third most spoken native language within the European Union and by some accounts is the fourth or fifth most taught foreign language in the world.

Italian is associated with the rich culture of Italy, famous for its luxury goods, art, gastronomy, and fascinating history.  Italian is seen as the closest descendant of Latin among the major modern Romance languages.
